The 1st Officer, aka ‘Operations Officer’, is the 2nd in command of the ship. Upon anything happening to the Captain, the 1st Officer should assume command immediately.
The 1st Officer is responsible for the Operations on the ship. This includes Crew health, Life Support, Environmental Controls and the like.
The 1st Officer is responsible for keeping the Captain informed about all situational variables that are NOT the direct responsibility of any other Bridge officer.
The 1st Officer is the first one expected to check the Galactic Library and/or the ships INTERNAL library (see pic below) to get background intelligence on ships, stations or other situational awareness needs.
